The Easy guide to choosing/ hanging wall-art for your home

If you find yourself living with bare walls because you just don't know what to hang on them without messing up the rest of your decor, then this is the right guide for you. I've summarized a few simple steps and tips that will make choosing artwork for your home an easy-peasy (and more enjoyable) task.

Choose the right wall

Choose the most important walls in your home for hanging artwork but leave some of them blank as well. This "breathing space" will allowed your art to stand out.

Consider proportions

Have your ever seen a big wall with a tiny frame of a super cute kid's school photo on it and thought that it was looking a little lost and lonely in there? That's because one of the first things you need to consider is how big or small your wall is. Your artwork needs to be proportional to the size of the wall.

Mirror the shape of the wall space available. If it's square, go for a square painting or print.

Number and size of wall-arts

One big one? Two matching ones? What about a gallery wall full of them! The choice is your but remember to group them taking into consideration the proportions of your walls as mentioned previously.

Style and Colour Palette

A foolproof wall-art option is going monochromatic. This style will suit most rooms.

If you are looking to add colour through your art, I'd recommend taking one or two colours from your room decor and use them to choose your prints.  King and Mcgaw have a super impressive selection of prints and frames. They also have a cool functionality in their website that suggests complementary prints to your chosen one. It can't get any easier than that!

In both cases consider photography as well as decorative objects. It can make a strong statement in a room if you chose the right one.

Hanging/ placing process and options

If you are hanging your wall-art; they should be hung so that the centre of the artwork is at eye level. For easy hanging make paper templates of the shape of your frames and attach them to the wall with Bluetac before permanently placing the nails. If you are renting and making holes in your walls is not an option, you could always use adhesive hooks..
Alternative options to hanging on the wall are Picture Ledges/ shelves.

Placing your prints on top of pieces of furniture like a chest of drawers or sideboard is another option.

Do you have any other tips? I'd love to hear them and maybe even add them to this post so don't be shy and drop me a line in the comments section :)

  6. My wall art is all a bit randomly placed as the lady who lived in our house put hooks up in really odd places! We have picture rails though, which makes it easier to move things around without banging more holes into the walls.

  10. Ahhh, are all of those photos of your home? It's BEAUTIFUL! You have such a wonderful eye for design and decor. We love having pictures on our wall - it really helps to make a room feel more homely, doesn't it? We have a gorgeous one above our fire place that I just LOVE and then an abstract painting my husband and I painted together during our early dating days that we keep in the bedroom. I just need to get better at displaying photos now I think!
